After the nerve-racking cutting stage, where I was never quite sure if I would end the session with the same number of fingers as I started with, comes the therapeutic process of glueing all the parts together. All the joints are butt joints, with rather narrow contact surfaces, so I have taken my t ....
That really was one of the most irritating recurring lines on 'Blue Peter', wasn't it? Anyway, in this case I'm referring to the models that I had already finished, or at least started, for previous Kylestromes. This should, I suppose, give me a roaring head start on this layout, but on the other ha ....
Well, I can honestly say that I had my idea for a layout to take to the 2010 Expo about two weeks before the challenge was announced, which makes me psychic. Up until now my only claim to fame has been a small layout called 'Chapel Wharf' that was built small enough to be carried in a small suitcase ....
The only reason why I ever wanted a PC was so that I could use Templot. Just how perverse is that? I'm a Machead, for heaven's sake, and if there is one thing I can imagine that is more alien to me than Windows XP, it has got to be Templot! Oh well, at least I have the consolation of knowing that ev ....
Plywood, to be exact. Because the intention is to be able to carry the entire layout and lighting unit in the hand, I have bought the lightest grade of plywood we have available in Germany. It is called 'Pappel' which translates as poplar, and I'm using the thinnest sections that I can get away with ....
No the blog is not going anywhere! On Thursday the DEAG bid farewell to Nick Mitchell who is moving to foreign parts, well the Lancashire / Yorkshire borders to be precise. Nick came to the DEAG a novice scratch builder and I think it is fair to say we have all been impressed with the quality of h ....
What is it with me and viaducts?
I'm on Penruddock viaduct, a few miles east of Keswick on the old Cockermouth Keswick and Penrith line (1865 - 1972).
The rather ugly concrete strengthening to some of the piers was carried out around 1916.
My trip involved (including some hellish hills) an unplanned ....
Here are some photos of the new baseboards, taken inside the house. Click on them to view enlargementsThe first shows the entire scenic section, from the public viewing side. The coaches on the middle board are Minitrix Gresleys. Were this the real Grimsby, you would be looking south. I would need a ....
Stephen Harris 16T kitsThe title says it all. Due to a change in career, I'm also moving house. As we all know this does tend to eat into modelling time. For now I will leave you with a quick shot of a rake of 16T minerals I have been building for the layout. Designed and sold by Stephen Harris, th ....
Some entrants are boasting that they will win, or have already won the Golden Jubilee Layout Challenge. Not much chance for me then!In order to achieve lasting fame, there's generally only one place to be, other than first - and it's not second or third. Just to give the judges a bit of encourageme ....
One of my current loco projects is a Class 11 diesel shunter from the 2mm Association's kit. I am really pleased with the way the kit is going together so far, and thought I'd show off my progress...
At the moment, the motor is temporarily wired hooked up to the frames for testing, but I will be ....
The picture here taken by yours truly (just managed to get into the line up before the shutter was released) shows those who went along to Pendon Museum on the Sunday following Expo 2mm in Oxford. Some fascinating sights at the museum.
Beautiful modelling by Roye England and some ageing but historic ....
Enough of all this prattle about looking at other peoples layouts and spending money! I have actually done a (very) small amount of modelling in the last week or so...
The D49 approaches the finish line albeit rather slowly. While I've been sticking small details onto the loco body, the chassis h ....
So, what did all the dosh get spent on at Expo? A major purchase for me, and the guys seemed to be doing a brisk trade all round, was a batch of Easitrac. I am hoping that this will speed the Layout Challenge entry along a bit faster; there are only 24 months to go after all!
From the main shop, I ....
"Did you enjoy that, then?"
"Yeah", said James, "it were good!"
Of course it was! Worth seven hours travelling in one day? For sure! A great day out, to meet old friends, meet new ones, and see some excellent modelling from old hands and from newer members alike. Sham ....
Ooh, here's an old favourite! Goldhanger, lovely scenic modelling. James enjoyed himself and spent quite some time here and also at Alan Lawrence's tram layout, Broadway. Thanks to everyone who contributed to a most enjoyable day.
You'll have to wait till tomorrow for my current modelling! ....
I think that sums up our hobby and I hope you agree? In the background you can see some of David Eveleigh's sheeted wagons which he was preparing for Expo2mm. I think you will agree that they look very good. Some time ago David produced a clamping system based on a board with holes in, a small d ....
Deciding on a new layout can be a nightmare, especially when you have no strong affiliation to one particular company or region. Fortunately, I thought out various options very thoroughly, before I came up with the idea of "Mount Royal" as my original entry for the Golden Jubilee Layout Challenge. O ....
Following my trial of Easitrac plastic track bases, I was very impressed with how easy it now is to make 2mm scale bullhead track - and how good it looks, too. For anyone who has not seen all the details you will find them HEREBullhead is no good for my Golden Jubilee Layout Challenge (GJLC) layout, ....
Motor fitted, wiring to complete.
Finally, I have dug deep and brought that digital camera I've needed for the last 4 years. Which means I can start pestering you all with images of half finished models again.
On the class 25 front there is progress, the motor is in and runs... not great but twea ....
I've just put a CT DCX74 chip inside a Farish 04 (the one with the test 2mm wheels discussed earlier). These notes might help others.
1) Fitting. ( Sorry no photos for a while, body back on loco and I don't plan to dismantle for a while). The chip lives in the cab roof with wires to front edge run ....
